Acting in Commercials
Some of the better acting colleges in New York offer classes in Commercial Acting. How does this style of acting differ from theater or film? In commercial acting, you are being called upon to sell a product. Unlike dramatic acting, no one needs (or wants) to see a character arc. No one really cares too much about the person you're playing. Rather, your job is to present an image (i.e., Mom, Dad, fast food counter person, banker, etc.), to sell the product for which the commercial has been written.
It's trickier than it may seem! Skills as a commercial actor involve intense salesmanship combined with performance ability. That's why taking a class in commercial acting is a great idea for anyone interested in making commercials.

You're in that Commercial, Right?
Commercial acting is one way to break into the business. Commercials look great on reels and resumes, and they pay well, too! Here are a few things to keep in mind when seeking commercial work:
Know your type. Millions of dollars have been spent on marketing research, and the clients have a very specific look and personality in mind for their commercial. Are you the perfect mom type? Do you look like a basketball coach? Could you represent middle-America? Or is your look more quirky, ethnic, or funny?
Have a commercial headshot made. Consumers put their trust more easily in people who seem friendly, happy, and reliable, which is why most commercials are populated by cheerful actors enjoying the product. Your headshot should come across the same way—upbeat, friendly, bright. Save the smoldering looks for your dramatic headshot.
Get a commercial agent. Just like any other field of acting, you need representation. Luckily, commercial agents are always looking for fresh faces. If you don't have much experience, try landing a commercial agent first. You'll find it easier to approach an acting agent once you have a few commercials under your belt.
Dress the part. This doesn't mean come in costume, but do wear something suitable to the role. If the casting call is for a harried mom, come in a neat pair of jeans and a sweatshirt. If you're auditioning for the part of a doctor, wear something that makes you look like a trustworthy authority. Dress to sell the client's product.
